Privacy
The short version: we save what Oldie needs to help, and nothing to sell. Nobody here reads the chats unless you ask us to. Chats delete themselves after 12 months, and one button deletes everything.
Last updated 20 October 2026.
In this policy, “Mum” means the person who uses Oldie, whoever they are. “We” means Watari Labs Pty Ltd, the Australian company that makes OldieGPT.
The law we follow
We follow the Privacy Act 1988 and all 13 Australian Privacy Principles in full. Some small businesses don't have to. We choose to, because Oldie holds health details and is used by older people.
What we save
- How Mum signs in. The email address, and whether it was Apple, Google or an email code. Never a password, because there isn't one.
- The “About Mum” details the family types in at setup: her name and what to call her, the helper's name, her suburb and state, family names, doctor, chemist, medicines, who to call about scams and in an emergency, any notes, and her voice and text-size choices.
- The chats. What Mum asks and what Oldie answers, as words. If she talks, we save the words, not the sound. We also note if an answer warned about a scam, a health worry or an emergency.
- What Oldie remembers. After a chat, Oldie may jot down a short note, like “Got a new TV in October”, and keeps a short summary of older chats. It's told never to keep passwords, codes, card or bank numbers, or private things like requests for money, family arguments, grief or her safety, and a filter removes any that slip through.
- Photos and files Mum shows Oldie (“Read this for me”) go to the AI with her question, then they're gone. We never store them. The chat just says “(sent a photo)”.
- The family PIN, scrambled so nobody can read it back.
- Which phones and iPads are signed in (“iPhone”, “iPad”) and when each was last used.
- Problem reports. If you tap Report a problem, we save what you write, and Mum's last 20 questions and answers only if you switch that on.
- Payments. Which plan is active, when it renews, refunds and credits. Apple or Polar take the payment. We never see card details.
- Simple numbers, like how many questions were asked each day and what they cost us.
- How the app is working. The app tells us which steps and buttons are used (for example “asked by talking”, “tapped Call Sarah”, “setup finished”), how long answers take, and error codes. Also the phone model, iOS and app version, language, time zone, and settings like text size or VoiceOver. If the app crashes or freezes, the phone sends us a technical report. None of this includes what Mum says or types. It stays with us and isn't shared.
Health details
Medicines, doctors and health questions are “sensitive information” under the law. Oldie asks before saving them, in plain words, during setup. They're optional. Oldie gives general information only, never medical advice.
Other people's details
Setup asks for family members' names and phone numbers, like who to call about scams. Please only add people who'd be happy to be there, and let them know. Oldie uses them only to help Mum, for example to show a big “Call Sarah” button.
The voice
- Talking to Oldie: the iPhone turns Mum's voice into words, on the phone itself when it can (otherwise Apple does it). The sound never comes to us.
- Answers read aloud: on paid plans, the words of each answer go to Google's Gemini voice (see below), and the sound is kept on our server for a day so repeats are quick. During the free trial, the iPhone reads answers itself and nothing is sent.
Why we use it
To answer Mum's questions, to remember the conversation, to make answers fit her life, to warn her about scams, to keep her plan and credits working, to find and fix problems, to make Oldie easier to use, and to stop misuse. Nothing else. We don't sell it, we don't use it for ads, and we don't use her chats to train AI.
Who can see it
- Nobody at OldieGPT reads the chats. We see numbers, like how many questions or scam warnings there were. The only time we see a chat is when someone taps Report a problem and chooses to send it.
- Whoever has the family PIN can see and change the “About Mum” details, see and delete what Oldie remembers, and download a copy of everything, chats included.
- The services below, only to do their part.
- Police or a court, only if the law makes us.
Who we share it with, and where
Some of these companies are outside Australia. We stay responsible for how they handle Mum's information, and we only use ones whose terms protect it.
- Cloudflare. Runs our server and stores the account, details, chats and app usage numbers, encrypted. Also sends the sign-in code emails. Where: We ask for the database to be kept in the Oceania region (Australia and nearby). Cloudflare is a US company and may also handle it in the USA.
- OpenRouter. Passes each question to the AI and brings the answer back. Set so it doesn't keep what's sent. Where: USA.
- The AI companies (now Anthropic and OpenAI, plus the company that runs the AI writing the memory notes). Read the question, recent chat and her details, and write the answer. Only ones that don't keep it or learn from it. Where: Mainly the USA.
- Google (the Gemini voice). Turns an answer into speech, for paid plans. It gets the words of the answer (which may mention a name), not her saved details. Set so it doesn't keep them. Where: USA.
- Apple and Google. Only if you sign in with them: they tell us an account number and, usually, the email. Apple also takes App Store payments. Where: USA.
- Polar. Takes payments on our website. It knows the buyer's email, the plan and the payment. We never see card numbers. Where: Outside Australia (mainly the USA and Europe).
How we keep it safe
Everything is encrypted on the way and where it's stored. Sign-in sessions and the PIN are stored scrambled. Only the people who run OldieGPT can reach the systems. If there's a data breach that could seriously harm anyone, we'll tell them and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) as fast as we can.
How long we keep it
- Chats: deleted automatically after 12 months.
- What Oldie remembers: notes about coming events go a few days after the date. The summary of older chats goes after 12 months without use. The family can delete any note any time.
- Sign-in codes: gone within an hour.
- Read-aloud sound: one day.
- Crash and freeze reports: 30 days.
- App usage numbers: about 3 months. They're filed under a scrambled code, not her name or email, so they can't be picked out and deleted early, and they go on their own.
- Everything else: until the account is deleted.
- Backups: our database keeps a rolling 30-day backup in case something breaks. Deleted information drops out of it within 30 days.
Deleting everything
In Oldie, tap Family, type the PIN, scroll to the bottom and tapDelete everything. The account, details, memory notes and every chat are deleted straight away, and from backups within 30 days. Can't open the app? Seehow to delete your data, or email privacy@oldiegpt.com.
Deleting doesn't cancel an App Store subscription. Cancel that in the iPhone's Settings too. Unused top-up credits are lost.
Decisions made by computer
Some things in Oldie happen automatically, with no person checking each one:
- Scam and emergency warnings. The AI decides if a message looks like a scam, a health worry or an emergency, and adds a warning and a call button. It can be wrong both ways, so Oldie always says to check with family.
- Memory notes. The AI decides what's worth remembering (see above).
- Credits and limits. When the credits run out, Oldie stops answering until there's a top-up or the plan renews. Emergencies still get an answer telling her to call 000.
None of these decide anything about Mum outside Oldie. If you think one got it wrong, email us and a person will look at it.
Your rights
- See it: family settings → Account and privacy → Download a copy. Or email us.
- Fix it: change the details in family settings, or email us.
- Delete it: see above.
We answer every privacy request within 30 days, and only send information to the account's own email. Mum can ask too, without the family.
If Mum can't manage her affairs, or has died
Her attorney, guardian or executor can email us with proof, and we'll delete the account or help as the law allows.
Complaints
Email privacy@oldiegpt.com and tell us what went wrong. We'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with the answer, you can complain to the OAIC at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.
This website
If you join the waitlist, we save your email and which ad or page sent you, so we can tell you when OldieGPT is ready. Unsubscribe any time. If you buy on the website, Polar handles the payment (see above). This website doesn't use tracking cookies. If that changes, we'll update this page first.
Children
OldieGPT is for adults. We don't knowingly collect children's information.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it starts.
